1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

UPDATE: the seller has now changed the pic in the craigs list ad to these terrible shots (above). I called him tonight. The car he has for sale is NOT a Baur, nor even a convertible. He said the original pic was given to him by the previous owner.  He claimed all the pics were the same car..... But it is very clear that there are two different cars depicted. Sorry about this false alarm. I will remove the from the Baurs for sale page also.

Thanks to alert bimmerforums member 87iSee who posted this in the e21 forum today!  If it is as listed (a 1982 320i), that may be a US version, of which, as far as we know, only 3 were officially imported to the US.  All the others were grey market cars.  Stay tuned as we try to track this one down!

This is also now posted on our "Baurs For Sale " page here in Baurspotting.

The Coffee Car

And now for something completely different!

.....Ok, it isn't a Baur, but.... I am a coffee aficionado... I am drinking my after dinner double espresso as I write this.  When I redid my kitchen a couple of years ago, I set up a little corner espresso bar, complete with a Swiss Solis espresso machine, and its own sink.  I make a variety of espresso-based drinks for guests, including cappuccinos, lattes, espressos, etc.  I love it!

So, the prospect of someday using my disposable coffee grounds as fuel for my car..... is fascinating to me.... regardless of how impracticable it may be at the present time.

So please indulge me here, and enjoy the article!

Can we get three US Baurs together at one event?

A (very large) picture from last weekend. A "Baur IG"-meeting

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=22791262#post22791262

Ok. great kudos to Jeroen for posting such great pics! Wow! I count 7 E21s in the pic, 6 E30 TC2s, and 2 E36 TC3s. Just amazing. Thank you, Jeroen!

Now, to put that in its proper perspective: he had 15 Baurs gathered together in those pics.

The largest showing of BMW Baurs in the US in 2011:
it is a tie. There were two E21 Baurs at Bimmerfest in Pasadena,CA in May 20011;

And there were two E21 Baurs at the BMW Connecticut Valley Chapter Show and Shine in Manchester Ct this summer.

There are several Baur owners who own two Baurs, which means they tie for the largest convocation of TC1 Baurs in the US every day in their driveway! We have seen two E21 US Baurs together several times....but in the US we have NOT seen MORE than two together at ANY time!
this is Lawrence Charlemagne and I getting our two Baurs together this summer.
Bullenstall Musem Baur and...my Baur waiting outside.

Not to mention Scott and Mike in PA. Really great guys, really enjoyed the short time we were able to spend with them.

It would be very difficult to compete with Jeroen's feat of having 15 Baurs together at one event. We DO know that there are 48 confirmed TC1 Baurs in the US. There may be 30 or 40 more that we don't know about yet. If we include some room for error, it is likely that there are less than 125 TC1 Baurs in the US. If we can manage to get 3 of them together at one location.... we would have a NEW RECORD!

It does look like we had 3 E30 Baurs and 1 2002 Baur at the Vintage this year.... but NO E21s!!!

So what does all this mean? How many Baurs can we get together at one event? TC1, TC2 ..... 2002 Baur and E36 Baurs? The Pooleman is bringing his TC2 to the BavAuto show on October 1. I have some conflicts, but I am going to try to join him there. Do we have any other Baurs that can attend this event?

We have recently had some unconfirmed reports of two E21 Baurs in the Boston area. Can we get any other info on those? Or can we get them to show at the Bavauto event next month?

Two 2002 Baurs: one on ebay and a 2002 white Baur in Philly

While surfing Bring a Trailer, I came across a post from last June showing the blue 2002 Baur below, which was for sale on ebay at the time .  (It eventually sold for $18301, btw.)
In the comments below (attached below) I saw mention of another Baur that had been seen parked on the street in Philly.   Sure enough, someone then posted that they knew the car and the owner!
Incidentally, our own fellow Baur owner, HarryPR, the ubiquitous HarryPR, contributes to the comments section.  This guy is EVERYWHERE!  :)
So, just for the heck of it, I checked the referenced location (a few blocks north of Fairmount Ave in the Northern Liberties section of Philly), and what do you know?  If you go to google maps, search for  "714 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA."..... Voila!  There it is!  A white 2002 Baur with a black roof and a rear spoiler, parked right there on the street!
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=714+north+3rd+street+philadelphia+pa&rlz=1W1MOOI_enUS356&gs_upl=2461l12695l0l13026l36l36l0l26l1l0l529l1794l0.2.4.5-1l7l0&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89c6c87b34c10369:0xcc72d7404552a926,714+N+3rd+St,+Philadelphia,+PA+19123&gl=us&ei=oCR9TpX9G6Tq0gG_tpUH&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBMQ8gEwAA
This reminds me of The Adventure of the Baur in the Brush last spring, in which the indefatigable Tom D. located the Baur near the beach in northern CA via its latitude and longitude coordinates!

Amazing world!

“There’s a decrepit white Baur that sits on 3rd St. in Philadelphia, a couple blocks north of Fairmount in Northern Liberties.”
That belongs to my old 2002 mechanic, it is parked in front of his house. He has a little shop around the corner on American that might still have an old dump truck parked in front. It took him a long time to find his Baur. Funny, I was thinking about showing him this listing as I read your comment mentioning his car.
If anyone in Philly needs a 2002 mechanic, he is your man.

@Brian H and mike from philly…Chris Stone is a great asset to the 02 community. Cool guy!

This is the text from the ebay listing on the Blue Baur:

1974 BMW 2002 Baur Targa
Brilliant Blue Exterior / Ferrari Leather Black Interior
Exterior Restoration
4 Speeds
1 of 1900 Baur Built Targas

A recipient of a Fresh Exterior Restoration in the brilliant Blue, this 4 Speed Targa is truly a rare find. This 1975 BMW 2002 Baur Targa was part of a limited production run of 1963 units, between 1971 and 1975 by BMW factory authorized Karosserie Baur. They were also responsible for models such as the BMW M1 and Porsche 959. A Removable Targa Top rests above the front passenger compartment, behind it a Soft Cabriolet Top folds back to give the rear passengers a peak at the sun. Power comes from its original and efficient 2 Liter Inline 4 cylinder engine and 4 Speed Manual Transmission that has been regularly serviced and maintained. This Car is imported from Germany the speedo meter is in KM and reads only original 139.000 Kilometer = 85.000 Miles.
The car has Turbo Karosserie with front and back spoiler. Aluminum Rim’s and Recaro sport seat’s retail one Seat 2000 US$.
The Interior is Black leather used by Ferrari.
It breaks my heart but I have to sell this rare unique Car. This Car was driven on the German Autobahn and knows speed. It handles like a sport car and hugs those mountain curves like a Porsche.
If you are a true BMW collector or you just love the 2002 edition this is a must have. These cars are selling up to 40.000 US$. There is no reserve on this car. I hope it will find a good home.
Thank you for looking at this rare German beauty.

Check Google Street View Maps…. the white 2002 Baur is parked in front of 714 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia in the pic. It is on the left side of the street going north.
I am amazed to find it exactly where you guys said it would be when you posted those comments last June. And who knows how long ago that pic was taken for Street View maps? Amazing.

Update on the Tesla Roadster vs. the E30 Electric Conversion

I found this on youtube tonight... it is the missing street race between the Tesla roadster and the Electric E30 Conversion.... FWIW

WTF Department: The 1948 Davis Divan

OK, this is a little off-topic, maybe even a little off the wall.... but ....  occasionally we will post items that we think are of unusual interest.
Last night Tom D, my friend Bill K., and I stopped in at F40 Motorsports in Portland CT before we went to dinner. I was perusing the F40 website later on, and I came across this pic, which was taken at an F40 Car show back in 2009. My reaction was.... WTF?

I found this quote:
"The purple car, is Davis #9, serial #482E99, which I visited in Oregon in 1998, which has bounced around several owners and a couple of auctions, and was reputedly last known to be headed for Connecticut! What a Distinction!!! The only Davis in all of New England. I have E-mailed the owner, but no response"
Also:
"a 1948 Davis "Divan" coupe ... 1 of 13 made ... all aluminum body ... removable hardtop ... 3 wheeler ... most ran a Hercules or Continental inline-four powerplant ... but this one was powered by a V8-60 Flathead!"

... on this site:

Meet the 'Davis Divan"!

At least for me this was ..... learn something new every day.... !!

In case, like me, you are wondering why the three wheeled car didn't really catch on, well.... Jeremy Clarkson of TOP GEAR may have found the answer:

900HP Electric BMW can beat a Tesla Roadster ??

Whoa.
http://www.dpccars.com/car-videos-11/01-28-11page-900HP-Electric-BMW.htm

It looks like the Tesla/BMW race has been taken down.  I did see it earlier tonight, though.... it looked like a street race... not a track sanctioned event.  I couldn't see the start, but FWIW the Electric BMW was way ahead at the finish.

All the Electric BMWs

Many thanks to bimmerforums member Tom D. For the following link to:

"Back in time: a gallery of BMW's electric car prototypes through the years"

This link comes to us at a perfect moment: last week we published the "Electric Ladyland" post about the craigslist ad for E21 that had undergone an electric conversion (September 5, 2011). Yesterday I posted the BMW ad from the 1972 Munich Olympics, featuring an electric BMW 1602 that appeared at the Games.
http://baurspotting.blogspot.com/p/bmw-advertisements.html

Tom D's post was in response to that ad, and really completes the circle. Great find, Tom D, and thanks again for posting it!

"Although the closest thing you can get to an electric car at BMW these days is one with Start & Stop technology, a hybrid (in the near future) or, if you're lucky, the Mini E, BMW has a long history of developing electric cars. For the 1972 Olympic games held in Munich, BMW provided a small fleet of orange-colored BMW 1602 Saloons that used a battery-powered electric motor. The cars didn't have much range, thanks lead-acid technology, a 144 V motor with 32 kw (about 43 hp), but they were good enough to be the support car in the marathon.

Following this, BMW made an all-EV model called the E1 in 1993. This all-electric car offered space for four passengers and their luggage, and used lightweight construction. The body was a combination of extrusion-pressed aluminum profiles with the outer skin made of plastic and aluminum. The E1 concept had a maximum speed of 80 mph and weighed less than 2,000 lbs and used a water-cooled motor. Besides the all-electric car, BMW made a hybrid version of the E1. Its internal combustion engine was a modified version of the 4-cylinder BMW K1100 motorcycle mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. It produced 82 hp at 5800 rpm, and the driver could switch between electric-only propulsion for zero-emission city driving and turning on the ICE on the highway.
We've compiled a large gallery of pictures of these models for your enjoyment. Check it out below."

From time to time, we like to post things that we think may be of interest to our readers.  This is one of those examples:  an E21 converted to electric drive.  This car was posted for sale on craigs list... and this is really all we know about it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtPk5IUbdH0
