1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Project Journal Update: We Have Brakes!

Finally got around to looking at the 'no brakes' situation this week.  I had filled up the brake fluid reservoir, and sure enough, I had brakes --- momentarily!  Steady pressure on the pedal would drive it to the floor, though, so I knew I was losing it somewhere.  I couldn't see any obvious leaks at first, but then I got under the car with a good light, and I could see that the right rear wheel had a peculiar spot.  I pulled the wheel and the drum, and sure enough the wheel cylinder was bad.

Old leaky wheel cylinder passenger side rear

You can see the old cylinder above, after I replaced it.  I ordered a new one from FCP, and installed sunday without a problem.  Well..... almost no problem.

I had taken it apart about two weeks ago--- first time I have done an old style drum brake in years!  I had released the brake shoe spring and the shoes to get a look around and clean in there.  When I went to reassemble everything two weeks later, I had it in my mind that I needed another spring to assemble it correctly.  So I looked all  over for this 'mystery' spring to no avail.  I am usually pretty careful to keep all the disassembled parts together.  Don't tell me I inadvertently scooped it up and threw it out with the trash when I was cleaning up!  Day um.  It was quitting time anyway, so I decided to look around again another day, and also break down and take a look at the Haynes manual for a visual of what it should look like re-assembled.

New wheel cylinder installed.

After reviewing the pics in the manual, I realized why it is not a good idea to wait two weeks between disassembly and re-assembly:   You forget stuff!   All the fuss about a missing spring was for naught:  I didn't misplace or lose anything!  I just forgot that there was only the one spring needed!

:)

So it all went back together nicely, no missing parts, and no extra parts.... which is the way I like it!  And... best of all.... I know that I now have solid brakes!  Not that I care, really, but, I gotta admit that once in awhile.... they do come in handy!

;)

Project Journal 2002: 3/31/2013 Prepping the 2002 driver's quarter panel

Happy Easter to All!
I got to spend a little time outside today prepping the driver's quarter panel.  Temp in the mid-50's. intermittent sun.   Nice overall.  This is an experimental piece.... I have pounded out most of the dents.  It still has some rust through as you can see behind the wheel well.  I sanded off  a lot of the chipping white paint this afternoon, along with the surface rust.  It was threatening rain, so I gave it a quick coat of primer also, before stowing it back in the garage.  Fresh primer helps to show all the problem areas.  I consider this a practice piece, btw.  The whole car is going to need this sort of attention.... and more!  So I am just starting slowly.
I did the work on those sawhorses you can see on the right.  That is my E21 Baur behind me, and my 1977 carbed 320i to the left.  The 2002 is just out of sight in the garage at the right, and my 1979 323i project car is under cover next to the garage.  ;)

Calling All Baurs! Part I of a Triple Whammy!

This is big, folks!

First there is this:

BMW to be Featured at Saratoga Automotive Museum

BMW History and Heritage on four wheels and two on display from May – November, 2013

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 8, 2013… BMW’s rich heritage will be showcased at the Saratoga Automobile Museum in an exhibition called “BMW – The Ultimate Driving Machine.” The exhibition, which will feature a retrospective of BMW cars and motorcycles, will run from May 6 – November 3, 2013. The array of BMW automobiles will include road cars and race cars, both from the modern era, as well as pre-war. The exhibition will also celebrate 90 Years of BMW Motorcycles.

“This exhibition at the Saratoga Automotive Museum will provide visitors a great look at BMW’s long heritage and provide a sense of how the company has evolved to become the leading premium automobile and motorcycle manufacturer in the world,” said Ludwig Willisch – President and CEO of BMW of North America. “It will also show just how integral motorsports has been throughout the company’s history.”

“This exhibit looks to be one of the best we’ve ever had at the Museum,” said Museum Chairman Charlie Montano. “ Working with BMW to create this one of a kind auto experience in upstate New York was thrilling,” continued Exhibit Committee Chair Alan Rosenblum. Exhibit Committee member Bob Bailey added “Both BMW of North America and our local dealer, Keeler Motor Car have contributed hours of time, effort and resources to make this a reality”.

The display of BMW automobiles will feature the marque’s most renowned prewar model, the BMW 328. The 328 dominated the racing scene in the late 1930s and early 1940s and will be shown both in road form as well as a custom-bodied 328MM, prepared for the Mille Miglia, one of the most vaunted endurance races of its day. The 1950s saw BMW produce such divergent models as the Isetta “bubble” car as well as the 507 Roadster, designed by Count Albrecht Goertz. The exhibition will include the spiritual successor to the 507, the BMW Z8 which arrived in 2000 – 45 years after the 507.

For many, the car that put BMW on the map in the US was the 2002, which received wide-spread media attention, including a review in the April 1968 edition of “Car and Driver” entitled “Turn Your Hymnal to 2002”. The higher-performance 2002tii, introduced in 1972, will be featured.

On March 21, 1975 just days after BMW of North America was founded as a subsidiary of BMW, a BMW 3.0 CSL won the 12 Hours of Sebring at the hands of Brian Redman, Sam Posey, Hans Stuck and Alan Moffat. A 3.0 CSL similar to that Sebring-winning car will be included. That car was fourth of four factory FIA Group 2 CSL cars built for 1973 German Touring Car Championship. Dieter Quester and Toine Hezemans won the European Sedan Championship with this car in 1973. It is thought to be the car that won the 24 Hrs of Spa (1973) with Quester and Hezemans driving. It was sold to John Buffam (US) in December 1973 and by Hurtig Team Libra in the 1974 season. The car is currently owned and made available to the museum by Scott Hughes.

BMW’s racing success continued in the 1970s with the BMW 320 Turbo with which driver David Hobbs scored four wins in 1977-78 in the IMSA GT series. It was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine capable of 600 horsepower. That engine was the test-bed for the 1,200 hp engine that powered Nelson Piquet to the Formula One World Championship in 1983. Many current BMW models are powered by the latest-generation of 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine that combines a unique blend of performance and efficiency.

Today, BMW M is widely recognized as the pinnacle of performance but in the 1980s, it was all new. One of the first M cars to arrive in the US was the 1988 M5. It was based on the second-generation BMW 5 Series Sedan and powered by 3.5-liter inline six similar to the engine used in the M1 super car.

The second generation BMW M5 stunned the racing world when the large four-door Sedan took to the track in the IMSA Super Car series… and won! A mate to the car that David Donohue drove to the 1994 Super Car Championship will be part of the exhibition.

The mid-1990s also saw the introduction of the second generation BMW M3, which will be featured. The BMW M3 took to the track in the US in 1995 and began an era of motorsports success that lasted for more than 15 years and spanned three generations of M3. In fact one of BMW M3 GTs, which competed in the American LeMans Series from 2009 – 2012, will also be on display.

BMW’s two-wheeled heritage will also be a key part of the exhibition. “BMW’s motorcycle heritage dates back even farther than its automotive heritage,” stated Peter Nettesheim, renowned BMW motorcycle collector, curator of the motorcycle portion of the exhibit, and operator of the Nettesheim Museum in Huntington, New York. In 2013 the company celebrates 90 years of BMW Motorcycles. In the 1920s BMW quickly earned a reputation for speed and reliability. The use of an opposing-twin “boxer” engine and shaft drive, unique in those early days, remains in use today on many models of BMW Motorcycles. The exhibit will feature three motorcycles from the 1920s including a 1925 R32, the first model, as well as a 1928 R63, featuring a 750 cc engine and a 1929 R62 Touring model which established BMW’s reputation for producing motorcycles ideally suited to long distance travel, a reputation that remains to this day. 1929 saw the first racing championships for BMW on two-wheels, a trend that continues to this day.
Also featured will be a 1931 R16 and a 1934 R11 with a stamped-steel frame. One highlight of the exhibition will be an unrestored military 1942 R12 found in a barn in France.

A 1955 R25/3 featuring a very economical single-cylinder engine is an example of a model best suited for a recovering post WWII Germany. Throughout its history BMW motorcycles have gained a solid reputation for authority use, even here in the United States. A 1969 R60/2 German "Polizei" police motorcycle will represent an earlier example.

BMW Motorcycles have been widely known for their two-cylinder engines, a legacy which continues to this day. A later example can be seen in the R100RT on display.

Innovation is every-bit a hallmark for BMW Motorcycles as it is for BMW automobiles. In the 1980s BMW gained a reputation for the performance and smoothness of its 4-cylinder motorcycle engines. In 1989, BMW became the first manufacturer to offer ABS brakes on a motorcycle. In the same year, BMW also introduced the K1, it was the most aerodynamic motorcycle on the road, which will also be seen in the exhibit. That innovation can be seen today with BMW’s first-ever super bike, the S1000RR.

1985 E30 BMW 323i Baur TC.  Condition is poor.  It was originally owned by the son of the Prince Spaghetti founder.  It was then imported from Germany to my father.  He used it for about 10 years.  It did not pass inspection in 2001 and was left outside covered for approximately 3 years until the cover disintegrated.  The car was then left in the weather from about 2004 until now.  The rear plastic window collapsed allowing water in through the opening.  The interior needs to be completely redone.  The hood is dented in the front by the emblem and the grill is missing. Everything seems to be falling apart but the frame still seems to be in good condition.  On the positive side the engine only has 70K, the frame of the Baur top and its components seem to be in working order, the LED sensor display seems to be in a good shape, the rims are in good shape, all the headlight and tail lights look ok, it has the chrome bumpers, and it has a custom wood steering wheel and shifter.  Would make a good project car or can be salvaged for parts.  I do know it is a very rare car.  I read somewhere that only 200 of the Baur TC versions of the 323i were made in 1985.  I was offered 1k for the car but figured I would list it to see if I could get more.  Bank check or Cash accepted and will only deliver within 50 Miles of Kingston MA for $200. Otherwise will have to be picked up.

Crazy Car Parade

Thinking of doing some custom mods to your ride to make it a little.... distinctive?  You know, something that may ...er... turn a few heads at the next Bimmerfest or Vintage show.

Here are a few ideas for your consideration.

;)
A little over the top, perhaps?   Well, fear not.  Here are some other ideas that might be more suitable for what you had in mind.

Or not!

 ;)

Enjoy!

Hurricane Sandy 1, VW Cabrio 0

Thanks to 1972_Targa in 2002FAQ for this link.  Thanks, Paul!  Be sure to check out the slide show at the end!

Personally, I much prefer this kind of an ending to the story, rather than what happened to this poor VW Cabrio:

;)

Anyway, here is the story.....

Not Just a Car. A Storm Victim, Too.

Adieu to a Beloved VW: Thousands of cars were flooded with saltwater in Hurricane Sandy, including the VW Cabrio owned by Michael Winerip of the Times. He sadly follows this family treasure on its trip to the crusher.
LONG BEACH, N.Y. — My dear, fun 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio — my black convertible summer car, the car that carried the family’s surfboards and bikes, that on warm nights with the top down, I’d take for moonlight drives along Jones Beach — was pronounced dead on Feb. 21 at the Alliance Auto Parts salvage yard at 50-16 72nd Street in Woodside, Queens, one more victim of Hurricane Sandy.

Cause of death: inundation by salt water.
The car was flooded in our driveway on the night of Oct. 29, when four feet of ocean breached the dune that had long served as our flood barrier and surged down our street.
It lingered for nearly four months. The first week after the storm, the Cabrio drove fine. I thought I’d dodged a bullet, and then one thing after another stopped working — the radio, the pump that lowered and raised the top, the heater fan ...
Not long after, the insurance company told me they were going to total it, and I decided to follow the car each step of the way to its end, wherever that took me.
I wanted to answer a question as old as the gas engine: Exactly where do flooded cars go to die?
There had been news reports of cars being taken to the Midwest for resale or turning up on eBay, and I wanted to see if mine would be given a proper send-off. That was why on Nov. 30 I rode with John Cohen, owner of Countywide Towing Enforcement, who was contracted by State Farm to tow the Cabrio from our driveway to an impound yard in Medford, on Long Island, an hour’s ride away. There it joined thousands of flooded cars — total losses as far as the eye could see, all waiting to be auctioned.
Usually, cars in these wrecking yards arrive smashed up. After Sandy, things had changed: Mr. Cohen, 49, has been towing most of his adult life and was struck by how normal the flooded cars looked.
Salt water is a hidden killer.
With the help of State Farm, I tracked the Cabrio when it was sold to the highest bidder, Sal Ingardia, general manager of Alliance. And I was there on Feb. 21, when Wilson Mora, one of Alliance’s dismantlers, removed the battery and gas tank.
“Once the battery’s out, no electrical,” Mr. Ingardia said. “Once the gas tank’s out, no gas. The car is dead.”
At 1:09 p.m., after a considerable struggle, Mr. Mora yanked out the battery and then, using a crowbar the size of Mario Andretti, pried the gas tank loose. “That’s it,” Mr. Ingardia said, and peering into the dislodged gas tank, he noted, “It was full.”
Exact time of death: 1:23 p.m.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau estimates that 250,500 cars were lost in Sandy, and this is the story of one of no particular importance — except that it was mine. The Cabrio was a bitty thing, born with just 4 cylinders and weighing but 2,838 pounds, assembled at a factory in Puebla, Mexico, according to its window sticker, with a transmission that had been shipped from Germany. It entered this country through the Port of Boston, known only by its vehicle identification number, 3VWDC21VX2M807914, (or 807914 for short).
The sticker price was $23,825. I bought it three years ago, with 137,526 miles, for $3,300.
It was the family’s happy times car. The best thing by far: it was a convertible. I drove it mostly around town, top down, radio up. It didn’t use a lot of gas. Even food shopping was more enjoyable in a convertible — so easy to toss grocery bags in the back seat.
I can’t say that it made me feel young, but I did feel better about being old.
I never washed it, and it still looked black.
At first my three teenage sons made fun of me. They said it was a girl’s car, but before long, they were asking to borrow it. “Please Dad, come on Dad, we love you Dad, we promise, we’ll keep it good, Dad, we swear Dad, next time we won’t throw our empty Busch Lights in the back, not a drop will be spilled Dad, we won’t even leave the surfboard wax on the hood, Dad, never again, no way.”
I figured if it survived my sons, it would live forever.
The night of the storm, it did not occur to me to park it on high ground. We’d lived on the beach for 30 years, through several hurricanes, and never had trouble.
