1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

BMW 2002 Baur Convertible Restoration!!

Start!

This beautiful BMW Baur Convertible was found hiding in a barn over the border in Wales. It had had a massive restoration by Marque experts Jaymic many years ago, but has been laid up for nearly 15 years. It has survived very well with just a little rust around the rear drivers side arch, and has more than its fair share of deep scratches, marks and pin dents which is a real shame because otherwise the quality of the paint and finish is superb. In reality there is at least one nasty blemish on nearly every panel so the only way forward will be a repaint, but at least there will not be too much prep to do.

Getting the mechanics sorted

The brakes were seized solid so the first port of call was to drag the BMW up onto a truck and get her back to HQ where we could give her a full mechanical overhaul. As with most cars that have not had any use for a prolonged period of time all of the fluids, rubber pipe and bushes, ignition parts are shot and require replacement. We also need to rebuild the twin carbs and sort out the tappets and timing. All of the parts are sourced quickly over night through the ever-helpful Jaymic.

Tyres

With the mechanics up to scratch we have had a run down to the road and had a brand new set of tyres fitted. The ones that were on the car had been left flat for a good period damaging the side wall and squaring off a section so driving it in a straight line was almost impossible. With this done it has had a new MOT and we can get a few hundred miles under its belt whilst we decide what to do about the bodywork.

Bodywork


The very fist job was to attend to the rusty rear arch. As usual, Mike’s surgical skills were used to remove the effected areas and then carefully graft in fresh metal from a repair panel supplied through Jaymic. With this done the car could then be sent to the body shop for a good rub down and some fresh paint. Because this car hasn’t got a roof panel, it means that there is far less to paint than you think. The exterior fixtures and fittings need removing carefully and labeling before the body can be prepared for paint. We are of course keeping with the cars original colour of Fjord Blue.

Convertible Roof

The convertible roof was faded and a rather a poor fit, so when the car came back from the body shop it went straight off to the trim shop for a complete new hood. All of the old fabric was replaced, and the aluminium front panel stripped and recovered in a lovely dark blue Mohair fabric.

Underside


To make sure that the car is well protected for the future we have given the underside of the vehicle a really good clean off, removed all of the flaky under seal and paint from the running gear and suspension and given it a fresh coat. The difference is amazing and really finishes the job. The car just needs a thorough detail to remove all of the dust from the interior and it is ready for some summer action.
