1982 BMW 323i Baur

1982 BMW 323i Baur
Memorial Day 2010 First Drive 1982 323i BMW Baur Lapisblau M20 5 speed #4154 of 4595 made. The car was imported to California by Dietel Enterprises. I have since changed the wheels, installed the clear turn signal lenses, and I am in the process of installing a new cabriolet roof. I have to do something about those bumpers, too. :) I love this car! To see one of the reasons why, check my post "Score One For the Good Guys" on 6/26/2011.

Is This a Baur? You Decide! Curious Barn Find in the UK!

Here is a curiosity on ebay in the UK.  Thanks to our friend Seventies Skateshop for the link!

Seller claims it is a Baur, but it does not look like a Baur Top Cabriolet:  it has a one-piece soft top, the roll bar has no attachment clips, etc.  Looks like a custom conversion, although the seller claims that it is an early Baur.

There is no hard targa top:  the soft top extends all the way to the front, unlike the Baur.

That roll bar is different from the Baur style:  no clips or attachment latches.
There is too much metal at the C pillar compared to a Baur TC2.

Note the snaps on the C pillar for attaching the soft top.  This is not the way the TC2 Baur soft top attaches.

This is what the top looks like on a genuine factory TC2 Baur:  note the attachment latches, etc.  The car above does not look anything like this.

Seller's comments:
"Up for sale again because of complete timewaster stfiesta1983 who bids , wins, makes No contact, returns calls or answers E Bay

So here we go again ....................

BMW BAUR Cabriolet

1985 318i

2 Door Coachbuilt Conversion E30 Model

This is a True Genuine Barn find !

Was owned by an elderly gent in Norfolk and placed in a barn along with some of his other collection Believed the elderly gent died and the estate was ceased when door was opened nine cars where inside this is one of them , I literally took it from barn and put it on the transporter myself so i know this is genuine

The BMW had No keys was locked up and we had to climb in to get to it i've got a picture of it with about an inch of thick dust on it

Full intention of restoring this back to former glory when it was home

It needs two front wings ( Not Rotten just misplaced Ebay £50.00, New not much more )
Small patch on bottom of inner cill ( Obviously why wing was unbolted )
Rear Passenger Wheelarch repair kit ( Chrome panel is there )
Rear seat has been misplaced also
Cabriolet Roof is ok and complete but is sun damaged and dry ( New on Ebay £195 i have the contact number )

I brought this home several months ago with full intention of going through it and letting my son have it but it's now gathering dust again

I have a Full V5 Logbbok in my name
New Keys cut
We've strained the tank put fresh battery in it charged the battery and she fired up and ran
i 've cleaned it down and all the paintwork is as good as the day it went into the barn
Electrics all work
Locks all work
Opened the boot with new key and found all the grilles, Panels , Trim , Spare Alloy and full tool kit only thing missing is the rear back seat

This really was a Genuine Find even to the point that where the elderly gent bought car was Norwich Garage when i rang the BMW agent in Norwich for the key the parts dept not only had record of the car being sold new by them even had records and could remember the car coming in as it was one of the first Baur Conversions they'd sold bringing it over from Germany for the customer

Sadly have to much to get on with elsewhere so i'm going to let someone else enjoy the car and let it go although i know i'll regret it

If you have any questions on it please feel free to contact me on

07990 550650

Many thanks for taking time to read the advert and enjoy bidding if you decide to."

We are trying to contact the seller.  This does not appear to be a Baur, at least not any Baur that we are familiar with.  Rather it is most likely a custom conversion by a different coach builder, or perhaps a DIY.

Stay tuned!  We will pass along any more info that we are able to glean!

Thank you, Seventies Skateshop! ;)
